As the change of cricket an evolution in ODI matches, requirement of fast cricket was demanding and Gavasker always been asked for low strike. Gavaskar strike rat in ODI is 62 and till 82 he even not crossed strike rate of 50 ODI. In his career he have played 102 inning and only 7 inning where he cross strike rate of 100. Out of 7 inning 6 are below 27 runs and only one inning which he score 100 and more than 100 strike rate above 50+ runs.

31st oct 1987, match played against the New Zealand. New Zealand given target of 221 run after fiery spell of C Sharma.
Having target of 221 runs K Shrikant 75 in 58 and S Gavaskar 103 in 88 ball gave surprise start to India. Gavasker and Shrikant both smashed 3-3 sixes in their inning. after Shrikant dismissal Sunil Gavaskar finish the match with M Azaruddin (47 in 51) and win the match for India.
During the end of cricket career Gavaskar surprise his fan with such fast cricket where he alway question inning like 36 in 194 ball (WC1975) and other similar innings.
