Farokh Engineer was the first India ODI wicket keeper for India and even the most successful WK in test till the time. He kept ODI wicket keeping very first time in 1974 vs England. As his retirement the Syed Kirana become next regular wicket keeper for team.
In this blog we see the most successfull wicket keeper of Indian team by time time and how mahendra singh Dhoni took the bar up.
1. Syed Kirmani ( 1976-86 )- During his time Syed Kiramani played 47 ODI and claim 36 dismisses with 27 Catches and 9 stumping. Syed playing in the ear when the Dysmond Hynes and Wynes Phillips.
Kirmani playing lower the order in the team and this time in cricket wicket keeper mainly chosen for his wicket keeping talent and not much expected from them.If wicket keeper batting was the its a extra curriculum activity for them. Syed has good hand in test cricket where he scored 2759 with 2 hundred. Kirmani was the part of 1983 world Cup winning team.
During 1984 vs England syed droped few crucial catches and he droped even from team. then in 1986 he regain his form and back to team. during world series cup against Australia he took fantastic catch which heart him on leg and he have to sit out side. This injury never given Kirmani to back in the team.
2. Kiran More ( - In 1984- 1994) - as kiramani got drop from test matches selectors place young Kiran more in place. Even Chandrakant Pandit was the part of team some instant. after Syed injury i 1986 and Kiran more effective Wicket keeping make him regular wicket keeper for India.
between debut to till 1994 Kiran Played 94 ODI. He was involved one famous controversy with Javed Miadad in 1992 World cup as. More's batting was as similar to Kirmani. he never score 50 plus run in ODI even nt able to score 100. He scored 563 runs with average of just 13. more played as pure wicket keeper.
3 Nayan Mongia ( 1994-2000) - Mongia was part of Indian team many occasion during Kiran More time as 2nd wicket keeper. he has also impressed the famous Wicket keeper Alan knott in 1990. Mongia started as pure wicket keeper. His bonding with spinners like Kumble and Raju was please to watch.
Later the time Nayan got promoted up on the order as pinch hitter in under Azaruddin Captaincy where he make team satisfy. Due to invent of power over during 95-96 mongia started opening with Sachin Tendulkar in few of the series. in 1996 sharja Mongia played some short & fine inning with Sachin Tendulakar. After Sanath Jayasurya & Kaluwiturna promotion up to the order in Sri Lankan team, Team India adapted Same strategy during 196 to 98.
Nayan mongia played 140 ODI the most for India till the time. he scored 1279 runs at an average of 2019. and also has 2 fiifty. Nayan mongia has 154 Dissmissel as wicket keeper 110/45 Catch and stumping respectively.
Mongia played his last ODI in 2000 and was part of the famous Test win in 2001 Vs Australia in Kolkata.

4. Rahul Dravid ( 1999 - 2004) - During the late 1999 to early 2000 Rahul Dravid did wicket keeping in absence of Nayan Mongia due to injuries.But after Mongia form issue and search of pure wicket keeping batsman make mongia out of tea. start of 1996 every team has pure wicket keeping batsman in squad. Adam Gilchrist, Adam Parore, Jimmy Adams, Romesh Kaluwitharana,Moin Khan, Andy Flower, Alec Stewart. Gilchrist arrival every team eager has become the necessity.
India missing this fulfillment and feeling short of one extra batsman due to unavailability of Wicket Keeping batsman. India Try many during such period like Saba Karim, Vijay Dahiya, Sameer Dighe but unable to impress as competition has. ODI is booming during time and Rahul Dravid took the decision to serve as Wicket keeping batsman until search End.
Rahul started wicket keeping in 1999 and played pure wicket keeping batsman in 2003 world cup as well. His keeping during spinners even find comfortable and against Sachin its awasome to watch.
Rahul Dravid played 73 matches as wicket keeper with 71 catches and 13 stumping which is quiet good. Rahul Dravid scored 2300 runs as Wk-Batsam. He score 4 hundred and 14 fifty with decent average of 44.
5. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (2004- till date ) - Rahul Dravid and rest team has set the bench mark for wicket keeping after 2000. every team basic need was Wicket keeping batsman to get extra batsman in team. India search was continues till 2004. between this period India tried Sameer Dighe, Ajay ratra, Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Kartik.
search of pure wicket keeping batsman end with the Dhoni arrival in 2004 match Vs Pakistan. the knock of 148 secure his place at least for 1 year that all think. But Dhoni was not in the mood of stopping. after inning of 148 he scored some quick fifties coming few matches which promoted his to up the order. then 183 vs Lankan, 139 vs Australia and many more inning make him permanent WK-Batsman for India. Dhoni become first wicket keeper for India to hit more then 5 hundred and going on. now India even has WK-Batsman like Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand etc.
